Human Years--
"You are quite a promising alchemist. It's a shame you're declining this offer. You have great potential, Irushi-san."
That's what he told me when I said I didn't want to try out to be a state alchemist. What did I say?
"Oh, please. I have a kid! You know I don't have the time."
And with that, the general patted me on the back, and offered to shake my hand. I declined, saluted him, and left. It wasn't that I didn't like the general. He was a good man. But, I was afraid that if I stayed in his presence any longer, I would cave, and accept his offer. I wanted to. I knew I could pass the exam. But not with my daughter at home. It wasn't worth it. I knew that I was required to take care of her.
My wife passed away when Riraito was very young. I can't help but think she was a little disappointed in me. My wife was the only one who worked in our family. I tried to make a living off of selling things I made using alchemy. It was my only talent. That's how the State found me. Unfortunately, I didn't make much money from selling random artifacts. My wife... She didn't make much money, so we were very poor. This explains how we couldn't afford the medical bills when she fell ill.
It started out as just a bad cold, but it progressively became worse. The doctors we could afford could only provide minimal treatment. And, as she lay on her death bed, she said she would be sure I joined her if I ever did anything to jeopardize Riraito's health or well being. The next day, I got a job as a shop clerk in the town market. I made sure to take the smallest shift I could get, and scrounge up as much free food from the place as I could. I guess you could say I was being forced to spoil my own daughter.
But, I guess this made Riraito grow up well. Of course... She never really grew up.
A few weeks after her twentieth birthday... three weeks after, I believe, she was involved in an automobile accident. She was walking on a cross walk, when an out-of-control car went speeding down the drive. There was no way anyone could have known or prevented the event. And yet, I still felt like it was my fault. Instead of holding a proper funeral for her, I took Riraito's remains, and made the decision to transmute her. Yes... I was willing to preform a human transmutation.
It didn't seem too difficult. The State even complemented me on how skilled of an alchemist I was, so I figured I could be the first to do it. After a bit of studying(four years), I went through with my plan. To my surprise, all went well.
Fortunately, my daughter had been brought back to life.
Partial Homunculus Years--
Unfortunately, Tamsin's transmutation was a success.
My first day alive again, I felt like I was in a daze. I just wandered back up to my room, and went to sleep. It wasn't until morning that I realized all that had changed. My black hair had been tainted with a dark purple tint, and my gorgeous green eyes were now died a deep, malicious violent. I felt thinner, yet more powerful. But, the strangest thing was, I felt a burning hatred towards Tamsin. Why? Shouldn't I be happy that I was alive again?
I went down the old, wooden steps that morning to be welcomed by a breakfast feast. I had no appetite what so ever. So, I just shook my head, thanked Tamsin for the meal, and left. I wasn't sure where I was going, just that I had to be out of that house. I made my way over to a small cafe on the edge of town. I didn't want to eat. I just wanted to sit down and have a drink of water.
Countless waitresses came to my table asking if I wanted to order any food. It infuriated me. More so, in fact, then it would hace before I had been brought back life. After yelling at one to leave, I turned to grab my glass of water, only to find that it had shattered. I quickly left the cafe.
Something strange was going on, but I didn't know what.
I decided to stay in a motel that night. It was stuffy in my small, cramped room, so I left for a little walk. By this time, it was late. The streets were empty. Before, I would have been scared out of my wits. We had never lived in a safe area. But, now, I felt so secure and protected, and I didn't know why. But I was soon to find out.
I was going to head back, when I noticed I was being followed. A young woman was following me. She followed me for about a block, until I turned around to look at her. I was a bit shaken by what I saw. She had short, black hair, and two violet eyes that had that same evil glint as mine.
"Who are you?"
I never got an answer to that question. Instead, I ended up finding out who I was now.
"Do you know what you are?" she asked. What could I say? I remained silent.
"I thought as much..." the woman said. "Well, child, I know who, and what you are.
I clenched my fist. She was getting on my nerves.
"I know who and what I am, too. My name is Riraito Irushi, and I'm a human being!" Well, duh! What did she think I was? A parrot?!
"Oh, but you're not," the dark woman said with a seductive smile. "You lost all claims to the race human when you died."
What the hell was she talking about?
She chuckled, and continued. "When your father decided to transmute your soul... Well, let's just say he had no idea what it would do to you. You may appear human, but, in reality, all he did was repair your body with a fragment of your soul." The woman turned her head slightly to one side. "Normally, the result of a failed human transmutation, if it survives, is referred to as a humonculus. A body without a soul to go with it. But you're not one of them. Not only did Tamsin use your own body to transmute you, but a portion of your soul was used to revive you. A proper term would be a [/i]partial homunculus.[/b]"
I guess you could say I was a little scared at that point. What was I? Like some sort of monster?
At that moment, my shirt ripped, right across the right shoulder. I turned quickly to look at the damage, only to see that there was a tattoo there. A red serpent, devouring it's own tail.
"That, child, is the tattoo of the Ouroboros. It proves your existence as a Homunculus. That tattoo binds your mind and body, and if an alchemist removes it, you will become a simple destructive force, whose only goal is to destroy everything and anything in it's path."
Get to the point. That's all I wanted her to do. Just get to the point and leave me in peace.
"Now, lucky for you, I probably wouldn't be able to get close to you, what with the unstableness of your personality."
I felt it again. That anger, that furiousness, a frustration towards a single person that I've never felt before I was brought back to life. "What do you mean?! What the hell are you talking about?!"
The woman closed her eyes and smiled, her grin looking so [/i]evil.
I clenched my fist, and as I did so, a patch of pavement beside the woman cracked. After a few seconds it crumbled into tiny fragments. The woman looked at the damage, still smiling, then looked back at me. "Ah, it seems as though your aim is a little off." This time around, the pavement right under her feet began to crumble, but she easily stepped away from that pavement before it gave way.
Was that beast implying that I did this?!

-sigh- Must I?
Yuki padded quickly up the steep hill, a few dark, black berries dangling from his thin jaw. The slender tom went about half way up the practical mountain, and lay down. He decided to rest a bit before eating. After all, being underfed and having to pad up a steep hill with something in your mouth was not good. After a bit, he began to eat the berries.
One last berry remained on the bundle. As Yuki opened his mouth to eat it, a squeak broke the calming silence of the area. The tom closed his mouth, and looked up. A small, light gray mouse sat there, looking at him. Hunger glittered in it's small, beady eyes. Belly snarling for more food, the pale loner looked back at the berry. One small berry wouldn't make much of a difference anyways. He nudged the berry towards the mouse after breaking it from the bunch.
It cautiously took a few steps toward the cat, looking him up and down with it's small, unchanging face. It quickly grabbed the offering and backed away practically tripping over it's own skinny paws. Yuki watched calmly as the mouse practically inhaled the berry. It had been very hungry.
In a way, Yuki and the mouse were alike. Mice were unable to make facial expressions like cats were. Yuki had that same problem. Both he and the mouse expressed all emotions through the looks of their eyes. It was a strange way of communicating. On top of that, Yuki and the mouse couldn't communicate to cats in a normal way. Such a sad life they both shared. Of course, the mouse was much worse off. It was being constantly attacked by larger animals. How mice weren't extinct, Yuki would never know.
Turning to look at the land below, the loner let out a quiet exhaled breath, which was actually supposed to be a sigh. Tired, he allowed his vivid, green eyes to slowly slip shut. They shot open as a screech split the air.
A large eagle split through the skies, heading straight for Yuki. Or, rather, the mouse who had comfortable positioned itself a tail length away. Thinking quickly, Yuki darted up the hill, quickly followed by the mouse. The tom turned to look for the eagle, to see where he'd have to run next to avoid being attacked. Fortunately, the eagle had retreating, probably going after easier prey. The loner was breathing heavily, still fairly panicked and tired from racing away that far and that quickly. His green gaze drifted to his left, towards the mouse, which mirrored his terrified expression. It was truly frightening, the world they both lived in.
